Joan of Arkansas

by Seri Wilner

A virtual two-person romance. Loosely influenced by the stories of Joan of Arc and Oscar Wilde, two longing students become distracted from their studies at their university library as they struggle to capture and assist a bird trapped within the university walls. Their combined effort to help the bird sparks a whimsical romance, but the complicated question of what to do next shifts the balance of their budding admiration, and reveals an underbelly of trauma and grief over past mistakes.

Lobby Hero is an exploration of the racial biases inherent in the American justice system. It examines sexism both in law enforcement and our country’s workplace structures. Taking place in New York City, it is a story riddled with complex questioning, positioned against typical views of right and wrong. A rookie cop, her inappropriately advancing superior, a lobby captain with a brother in jail, and an innocent bystander. Lobby Hero is a play that details the grit and gray of our society through humor and difficult conversations.
